My Big Secret to Always Being Happy

The Two Questions I’m Often Asked!

  1. Are you always so happy? Answer: Yes.
  2. How do you do it? Answer: I choose to be happy.

Don’t get me wrong. Some days are tough.

If you’re anything like me, a lot of days feel like the deck is stacked against you. You try to plow through the piles of stuff that seem to have mysteriously appeared while you slept, and fight to catch your breath through it all. Personally, some days I just want to crawl back into bed and throw the covers over my head. That always sounds like the easiest solution.  Just admit defeat, give up and give in to the bad mojo of the moment. But that’s rarely an option.

I’ve got the answer!

I just need to surround myself with sunshine. I know… living in Florida, The Sunshine State, makes that sound pretty simple, but it’s not that kind of sunshine. I’m talking about the glow that can only come from within. Instead of giving in the doom and gloom, I’ve discovered that the best solution on those otherwise gloomy, overcast, days is to inject some sunshine into my soul. I simply convince myself that no matter the storm clouds or the barometric pressure, the day is going to be absolutely amazing… as if I’d eaten a big bowl of sunshine for breakfast. By taking control of my mood and choosing to be happy, I prove Abe Lincoln right when he said, “Most people are as happy as they make up their mind to be.”

This is where people usually roll their eyes at me.

“But Suzy,” they say, “you just don’t know how hard life can be.” Really? Seriously? I don’t want to have to create a chart to tally up and compare woes, so you’re gonna have to trust me on this one. My hardships rank right up there with the best of ya! I promise. But even on the darkest days of my life, no matter my pain levels or profound grief, no matter how difficult the challenge is before me, I consciously make the choice to be happy. Starting the day with a glowing attitude not only allows me to deal with life’s inevitable challenges — but it also brings my positive mojo to any situation. And bottom line,  for me, that’s more than half the solution to almost any problem. Mountains that once seemed too high to summit, now are within my reach.

When life gets tough, I get tougher.

The really interesting thing is that the tougher my day is, the more I try to sparkle like the noon-day sun. I squint my eyes and search through the darkness, looking for the bits of sunshine and joy that are there, but are sometime hard to see. By acknowledging the slightest glimmer of light, it’s energy allows it to grow  and eventually glow from within me.

The best part.

The best part is when we allow our happiness to glow from within, our presence helps others to do the same. When we are happy, our cup overflows. So serve yourself up a big bowl of sunshine for breakfast.  (Go ahead… have a second one! ) Choose to make it a great day.

LOVE this! I too, have a way of seeking out the sunshine in the dreariest of days.

Yay, Jan. You are my kind of People! I do think its interesting that a lot of folks think I must live a charmed life and thus its easy to be happy. That is so not true. This past year has tried my faith, my values and the very glue that holds me together. Yet I refuse to do anything but embrace the light!
